Revenge of the Fallen Guardian

Chris carries his sister, who has slept for a thousand years, through the ruins without turning to look at anyone. Before that, he spent a thousand years alone at the bottom of Fiendlocket Spire, holding down three beast emperors nine hundred thousand years old, seventy two spirit beasts a million years old, and more from the hundred thousand year class than could be counted. Every one of them went weak in the knees at the sight of his blade. After the thousand years, the royal family of Tiandu sent envoys to tell him he wasn't fit to hold a treasure like the Spire. They accused him of scheming to take the empire's wealth for himself and said the newly appointed Sea God state preceptor was ten thousand times more capable than he was. They pressed him to leave. Chris didn't argue. He canceled the contract on the spot and walked out of the tower. Half a day later the Spire came apart. Hundreds of millions of spirit beasts poured out of it. The general who commanded the demon-suppression forces died in the field. The Sea God was beaten until he coughed blood and ran. All seventy two cities of Tiandu fell in sequence, the capital was put to slaughter, and the royal family fled into exile. The same people who had told him to get out now knelt in the wreckage asking him to come back. They said they had been wrong, that they regretted it, that he was the only one who could save what was left. Chris walked past them carrying his sister, who had not woken in a thousand years, and did not turn his head. When I was guarding it, he told them, you drove me out. Now you beg me to return. It's too late for that.
