Synopsis
The engagement was arranged by the families, and neither party had met the other. Bella, by then a working lawyer, was promised to Edward without knowing it. Edward wanted the arrangement dissolved and hired a lawyer to void the contract. The lawyer he hired was Bella. The two of them had been together as children and had been separated for sixteen years, and he had spent that time looking for her. He recognized her fairly quickly. She took him for someone else and told him she was engaged. He kept his feelings to himself and looked out for her without telling her who he was.
