Some people are born able to see the inside of a thing: what it is made of, what it is worth, whether it is what the seller says it is. Keith gets that sight after he dies. In his first life he went after the man who destroyed his parents, using the offer of a treasure as cover for the killing, and the man's own enforcer cut him down. He opens his eyes at ten years old with the Golden Eyes. His father has been cheated in a rough-stone gamble and cannot pay for his mother's operation, and is standing on a ledge over it. Keith looks at a discarded stone nobody wanted and finds glass-grade red jadeite inside worth a million. That covers the surgery. After that he cuts more red jade out of stones the cutters laugh at, notices his mother's hospital records have been altered and exposes the orderly behind it, and at an auction his enemy is running he picks the one rough stone holding imperial green against everyone's advice. In a herbal shop he spots a fake ginseng root, diagnoses the lung cancer of an old man named Mr. Tang, and writes him a prescription, which earns him the Tang family's backing. He takes shares in a pharmaceutical company with that prescription, recovers a Tang heirloom jade ring and a genuine Tang Bohu painting, and with Gu Lianchen, a jade dealer his enemy had ruined, puts together ten billion for an appraisal wager, best of three, against him. The rounds are antiques, old coins, old paintings.
