Ian Clark's first love has come back into his life, and Clara Baker, who is engaged to him, watches the plan she has been working on start to come apart. Clara is an orphan from Harbor. Her mother was murdered, and marrying into the Clark family was the way Clara chose to get her revenge for it. Getting close to Ian was worked out step by step with that in mind. With the other woman back, Clara turns to David Davis, Ian's closest friend and the man he served alongside. She lets David get close to her where Ian can see it, and the two men, both from Harbor's elite, end up competing for her attention, which is what she wanted. David's devotion to her turns out to be real, and he is steady with her in a way nobody else has been. In the middle of the scheme she begins to have trouble telling what she actually wants. Meanwhile the preparations for her wedding to Ian carry on.
