Crimson Storm: Lone Avenger

Twenty years ago the Big Nine clans of the capital wanted what the Reid family kept in its Langya vault, so they went in together and killed the household. Afterwards they had the Reid name taken out of the records, until there was nothing left to say the family had ever existed. Craig Reid went over a cliff during it and lived. A master found him there and took him on. His talent was unusual, and in twenty years he reached the top of what a person can cultivate on this earth, one step short of ascension, and then the tribulation lightning that should have come for him never came. The master worked out that karma left behind was holding him in place, and that nothing new could be built until the old was broken, so he sent Craig down the mountain to wait for his moment there. Craig meets Zoe Zimmer and gets pulled into a feud between her family and one of the Big Nine that has been running for decades. He wants no part of it at first. Then he finds her family's fortunes tangled up with his own, and starts to think the feud is the karma his master meant.
