From Hostage to Holder of Power

Synopsis

A modern engineering doctorate awakens as Crispin, the supposedly simple-minded sole heir of Qi, and is sent to the Zhou capital as a hostage. Crispin hides his restored intellect while Empress Lysandra struggles against Chancellor Su's control and his attempt to force her into marriage with a clan loyalist. Using modern knowledge to build weapons and win impossible contests, Crispin rises from expendable captive to the empress's consort, then joins her against his treacherous uncle Mortimer, northern invaders, and the Su faction threatening both Qi and the throne.

Episode 1 might make you go "what IS this lunatic" and bail. He's my favorite short-drama actor and even I hesitated. Please stay with it!! The acting is unreal, the way his eyes go, the way he smiles, each one gets me >_<

My favorite of his modern-set work and honestly my favorite short drama full stop. You get the complete unhinged-psycho performance, and I'd say his acting leveled up here. If you're working through his filmography, this is the one.

The plot is hard to follow and never really comes together. With all the flashbacks and dream sequences, the pacing has no tension at all…
