Emily works for Vivian and Dominic, in the household of Madame Delacroix. When Madame Delacroix dies, the two of them frame Emily for it, wanting her name struck from the will and Emily herself in prison. Detective Ramirez takes the case and finds that Madame Delacroix died of natural causes and that Emily had no part in it. As the investigation goes on, Detective Rodriguez starts looking into the circumstances of Raphael's disappearance, which leads back to Dominic, and Dominic goes into hiding. Cleared, Emily inherits Madame Delacroix's fortune, which she had not expected. She had made a promise to the old woman, and she keeps it by going to look for Madame Delacroix's estranged son, Jamal. When she finds him she offers him a position at the manor as a servant, and his pride makes him turn it down at first.
