As a child she was called Noémie. She covered Cole's escape and was beaten for it until her vocal cords were destroyed, and she has not spoken since. An alcoholic took her in and raised her as Ellie, using her as leverage to extort money from Cole. She was hit, run into debt and used in his schemes. She kept her temper and her sense of right, and for years she wore a small notebook on a string around her neck and wrote out what she wanted to say, because nobody around her would read her signs. Cole built the Yunelis group from nothing and became the richest man in the city. He is cold and hard to move, and the one thing he has never let go of is the girl he promised to protect. He will go against anyone for her, which leaves him slow to see the woman actually standing in front of him. They made a promise to each other as children. Grown, they run into obstacle after obstacle, and love does not stop them wounding each other over and over. They put everything into getting to one another and come away cut up for it.
