Joanna Wells worked as an assassin and was married to a bodyguard. Nathan Chase was responsible for her husband's death. Joanna took a new name and entered the Chase house as a maid. When Nathan's girlfriend was facing a prison sentence, Joanna took the blame and went to prison in her place, and in return was given the chance to become Nathan's girlfriend herself. After her release she came between Nathan and the girlfriend a little at a time. Nathan had been mistreated by his father as a child. He grew attached to Joanna and cold toward the girlfriend, who fell into despair. A wedding was arranged between Nathan and Joanna.
