Whispers of Five Elements

Richard Reed is promised to a woman he has not seen since he was a boy. His master, dying in the massacre that wiped out the Divine Sect, asked him to find his daughter Celeste ten years on, marry her and look after her, and Richard said he would. He was the only one from the sect to live through that night. Ten years later he is the youngest celestial master in the country, and he travels to Kaedon County to keep the promise. One of the women of Celeste's household is already dead when he arrives, killed the way the people at the Divine Sect were killed. He goes up to the house and Celeste receives him. The two of them grew up together, but she runs a large business now and still sees the boy in Taoist robes he was, and she offers him money to go away. Before he leaves he works out that a fire will take the family's second son that night, and nobody in the house takes it seriously. Deaths keep happening there afterwards, each one carrying the marks of the old case, and Richard stays to find who is doing it.
