The supernatural comes back into the world and people lose their heads over it. Alex Carter does not, because he alone can see a set of prompts nobody else can, telling him what work is available and what it pays. So he takes the jobs. He clocks in as an orderly at the Hell Hospital, waits tables at the Hell Hotel, works the front desk at the Samsara Internet Cafe. Each shift is another entry, another reward, another step up in what he can do. Eventually he has enough to build a prison strong enough to hold gods, and staff it. The rest of humanity is living through a permanent nightmare while Alex treats the whole thing as steady employment with good prospects.
