Countdown to Heartbreak

Quiana has been with her boyfriend for three years when she overhears him telling friends he is going to the airport to collect Nora, his first love, who is coming back from abroad. After that she watches him worry about Nora, arrange things for Nora, take Nora's calls. Nora is careful about it and never says anything that could be quoted back at her, and Quiana starts to feel that three years have been a joke played on her. She applies to study overseas and is accepted. Then she sets a countdown: thirty days, ending on their third anniversary, which is the day her flight leaves. She grows colder by degrees over those thirty days, and he is too busy managing Nora to notice that anything about her has changed. On the last day she says goodbye and goes. He comes home to a place with nothing of hers left in it, as though she had been lifted out of his life entirely, and only then does he begin working out which of the two women mattered, and where she went.
