Xiao Yang led the Tiandao Alliance, the body that stood over the eight major martial arts families. One of his old followers was dying, and knelt to ask him for a favour: look after his granddaughter and keep the family from going under. Xiao Yang agreed, put his name and rank away, married into the family, and helped it from the inside without telling anyone what he had been. The granddaughter, Jiang Ruoyao, knew none of this.
