The Veteran’s Promise

Jack Holt came out of the Marines and built Ridgeline Farm Supply from nothing, and it now employs roughly two hundred disabled veterans who served with him. One debt he never got to settle was to Sam Russo, who lost a leg getting the whole squad out. Sam is dead now. His widow Maria and their nine-year-old daughter Sofia are on their own, and Derek Malone, who runs the local market, has decided a grieving widow is his to take. The only thing Sam left the girl was a phone number and a promise that whoever picked up would come. Sofia dials it and Jack answers. Getting the Malones off them turns out to be the simple part. Derek's brother is Connor Malone, a Pittsburgh magnate with half the city under him, and within a day he pulls every contract Ridgeline holds. Jack is stripped of the business, forced to plead, and humiliated in public along with Sam's widow, in front of men who fought alongside her husband.
