The man who takes Su Panxia's money in Guangshi has no reason to expect her back. He has all of it, the 200 yuan she came south with, and she has just spent three days and three nights standing on a slow train to get there. The year is 1985 and she has arrived from later than that. She works out who he is, has him caught, and gets the whole sum returned. With it she opens a stall at the mouth of an alley and sells clothes off it by methods nobody there is using yet, cut prices, promotions, and a live person wearing the clothes for customers to look at. The stock goes. She takes a lease on a storefront and becomes the first person in the county to run a private clothing business. The years after that hold long hours and setbacks she had not planned for, and she keeps building the business out from that one shop.
