Hera takes the token from that night and puts herself forward as the woman who saved Ares from the poison, which makes her his betrothed. Serena, who was the one actually there, has no way to say so, because by then the memory of it is gone. Serena is a low-ranking priestess on Olympus. Ares had been poisoned with something only another body could draw out of him, and she went to him for that reason and got pregnant. The law of the gods would not have allowed the child, so she went to the Fates and traded her memory and part of her lifespan for a seal to hide it. The father's name went with the memory. She is posted back to the war temple, meets Ares again, and neither of them can account for the pull between them. He decides they will be engaged for appearances. They share a house, and feelings come out of it. Hera works on her the whole time, arranging accidents and blaming her for them, and Ares moves from suspecting Serena to standing between her and everyone else. He goes against the ruling of the gods and says in public that the child is his. Then the memory comes back and brings the rest of the bargain with it. Serena has six months. She turns cold on him to spare him the ending, and he refuses to be sent off and says he intends to keep her. The army of the fallen gods reaches Olympus while the six months are running down, and Hera's account of that night comes apart in front of everyone.
