Ghosts can be spoken to, the gates of the underworld can be walked through, and a talisman drawn the right way will point out who committed a crime. Griffin has trained to the top rank of Taoist practice and can do all of it. The system he answers to sends him down among the living to build up good deeds, which is how he ends up posted to the police station on Peace Street. The captain and the rest of the squad take him for a crank. Then he finds a stolen motorcycle by casting a hexagram, and after that he pulls apart a ring of thieves and starts locating children who have gone missing in other parts of the country. He announces that he believes in science and then closes his cases with talismans. Some of the work is bullying at schools that ended badly, and some of it is killings arranged to look like curses. He goes down to the underworld when a case needs it. His policy on anyone he catches is to keep hitting until they stay down, and he says often that the ghosts are the ones worth pitying and the people are the ones worth fearing.
