I See Your True Name, I Decide Your Fate

Spirit energy has come back into the world, and every person and every spirit creature is born with a true name written into the soul. It does not show on the outside, and anybody who learns yours has the one thing that can finish you, so people use aliases with each other. Jerome Chase works security on a street of antique shops. He is lazy and there is nothing about him to look at twice. His left eye goes through any illusion to the true name underneath, one look tells him a person's past and future, and a sentence out of his mouth settles life, death and rebirth. He has spent years out of sight, putting down monsters for the bureau that investigates the paranormal and leaving the credit to the agents who arrive afterwards. One of those agents, Summer, keeps trying to work out what he is. Shadowmire Hall has the bureau's director under threat and uses him as cover while it controls monsters of its own. That is more than Jerome can stay out of. He and Summer go after the Hall and start turning up a blood sacrifice from decades earlier that the whole thing rests on. Behind the man who runs the Hall there is somebody bigger.
