Nina comes back to the city three years after leaving it, with a Nobel Prize in medicine and a professorship. Jason spends that stretch looking for her, and while he is doing that there is another man around her, an heir from a port city family. Her father drove for Jason's family and she moved into their house with him as a child. She had come from the countryside and they were city people, so she was careful with everything she touched there. She broke a vase the lady of the house was fond of, the housekeeper meant to report her, and one of the family stepped in first. She spent seven years in love with Jason without telling him.
