Laura Walker's boyfriend and her best friend have been seeing each other behind her back, and between them they take her savings and the only house she owns. She was born into the Davies family and lost to them as a child, and the Walkers who took her in gave her the name she goes by. Three men come looking for her at the point when she has nothing left. They are her brothers, and they have been searching for a long time. They go after the people who stripped her, with the money to do it properly. Laura moves back into the family. The second brother was adopted into it as well, and neither of them says anything out loud about what is happening between them. Then he is diagnosed with something that will not be cured. He starts looking for a husband for her, somewhere she will be provided for, and he lies to her about how he feels so that she will agree to it. Laura has already worked out part of what he is doing.
