Rose Petals and Resurrection

She was the richest woman in the world and she had a name as a healer who could bring people back from the dead. What she wanted was to be among people who were not weighing up what she was worth to them, and she could not have that as herself. So she put on a beggar's clothes and went to live among ordinary people, and when she came across someone she thought deserved it she got them to the thing they wanted. The eldest son of one of the great families had been lying unconscious for three years and the best physicians had nothing left to try. The beggar woman came in filthy and said she would treat him. The household laughed at her, and some of them drew their swords. She stayed where she was. She made one move and put a hand on him, and after that nobody in the room said anything. 'Draw a bath. Hot water. Rose petals over every inch of it. And the pretty boy there.' She pointed at the heir. 'Bring him to me.' He had given his word, and when he was well again he held to it and insisted on marrying her, with no idea who she was. Her own fiancé and her closest friend turned on her afterwards, and he stayed with her while that went on.
